Have we allowed commercialism to reduce Valentine’s Day to a receipt?

A heart-shaped box that costs more in February than it did in January. It feels predictable, almost scripted, as if love requires fanfare more than it does substance.

Across cultures, the instinct persists. In Japan, chocolates are given to friends and colleagues. In Mexico, it is a day for love and friendship. We want to say what we often leave unsaid. You matter to me. I choose you.

But that is not where this began…
