Purpose In The "Not So Shiny" Seasons
Learning to see God in the ordinary, not just the spectacular
There have been so many moments in my life where I have cried out for “more purpose” and “more vision”…
But if I am honest, what I really wanted in those moments was something bigger, louder, or more exciting than what God was actually doing right then.
I wanted the bright and shiny.. I wanted visible and immediate impact.
God was offering… slow and steady.
And that is usually where the danger starts.
When our hearts crave something more thrilling than what God is actually doing, we can be tempted to rush out and build on our own. To manufacture purpose. To grab the pen out of God’s hand and start writing our own story line.
Scripture is full of people who did exactly that… and it never ends well. 😉
Real purpose Is found in the middle of an ordinary day. Let’s look together how God uses slow, hidden obedience’s to answer our loudest prayers for purpose.
There was a season where my life felt like one long loop of “nothing special.”
Wake up early.
Fight traffic to a job that felt more like survival than calling.
Answer the same customer issues.
Come home tired.
Do dishes, help with homework, try to be present as a dad and husband, then fall into bed and do it all again… over and over and over again.
No stage.
No spotlight.
No “big purpose” moments.
Just repetition.
I remember one night driving home, sitting in traffic, talking to God and saying, “Is this it? Is this really what You had in mind when You talked about “plans and purposes?”
What I wanted in that moment was something bigger and tangible in the now.
A role with a title that sounded weighty A ministry that looked impactful.
Something that felt like it “counted” more than meetings and bedtime routines.
What I did not realize at the time was that God was using that exact season to shape me.
Learning to show up for my team when I was tired.
Learning to love my family well when no one was posting about it online.
Learning to be faithful with the work in front of me instead of chasing the thing I wished I had.
Looking back now, those were some of the most important years of my life and the life of my children. There are memories from that season they still recall all these years later.
Nothing in that season felt thrilling in the moment, but God was quietly building the character, resilience, and compassion I would need for every “bigger” assignment that came later.
The purpose was not missing.
It just did not look like I expected.
It looked like simple, hidden obedience.
One of the keys I have learned in my own journey is this… Zoom out!
Look for what God is doing in the longer term season… most of the time, that shows up in simple, humble, almost boring obedience steps we can take.
Serving when no one is watching.
Choosing love when I feel misunderstood.
Opening my Bible when my phone would be easier.
Praying honest prayers when I feel numb.
Showing up in community when I would rather withdraw.
Those small, daily obedience’s rarely feel like “big vision” in the moment.
But they are exactly where God loves to reveal His purpose and weave into us the things we will need for the places He is taking us.
Proverbs 29:18 says “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint;
but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.”
Translated… when people cannot see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves… but when they pay attention to what He reveals, they are blessed.
Maybe today is not about God giving you a bigger, flashier assignment.
Maybe today is about opening your eyes to what He is already doing…
right in the middle of the ordinary.
Look for Him in the mundane… finding God’s purpose in everyday life.
Listen for the still, small voice… finding vision and purpose for your life.
Then take the next simple step of obedience in front of you.
That is where real purpose is found!
